Dental Update

I know for the most part,
no one really cares about our dental expenses other than Ryan and I,
but please bear with me here while I chronicle our life.
So...the result of yesterday's ortho consults for Austin and Preston are as follows:

Next week begins the journey down the road of cash flow out the window.
Braces aren't cheap, my friends.
In fact, they're a pretty little penny.
Austin and Preston are scheduled to go in on Tuesday for impressions, x-rays, and to have the little spacers put in to make way for the brackets. The next week will bring with it, the actual braces. Now, along with braces, Austin needs a bite plate and Preston needs an expander to widen his jaws a little...sounds painful, but the end result will be worth it.

Am I really old enough to have children in braces?
Seriously.
They were running around playing tag and calling me "Mommy"
just yesterday...at least it feels like yesterday.
Austin will be in high school in one year. One year, friends. How did this happen so fast?
I was watching Sara's video of sweet little Hudson yesterday...watching him toddle around, playing with blocks, learning to feed himself, singing himself to sleep in his crib, and the sense of loss hit me like a ton of bricks. Now, I'm not saying I don't enjoy the stage we're at because believe me, it does have its perks...major perks...but it's the
realization that those days really are gone.
Done. Over with. Foreva.

Okay, enough of that.
Let's hear it for straight teeth!
Happy hump day!!

I sucked my thumb until age 8 and the result was 3/12 years of braces. After the braces my teeth were still so deformed from having sucked my thumb that I had veneers put on at age 14..
Guess what?? veneers only have a shelf life of 15 years.
SOOOO..several years ago I had to replace them.
Can you say 10K??
arghh..
it's worth it though.. A smile is everything. Just like with your boys.
People look at your teeth.

I dread the brace era and we all know TM is going to need them bad.

Miss you!

The expander was awful- food gets up under it and such.
Both my boys wore them and are done and their teeth are fabulous.

It seems like every kid gets braces these days! I had them when I was in middle school/high school and now my teeth do look pretty nice! Like Dee says, everyone looks at your smile! Do you think they will give you a two-for-one special since you are getting both boys braced up? haha!

Awww - I'm sorry my video made you sad. Just think about ALL the things you DON'T miss - teething, not sleeping at night, temper tantrums (ok- they might go on even into the teenage years), changing diapers, buying diapers, paying for daycare...did I mention buying diapers and paying for daycare???? Ugh.

I had the expander. Two of them, actually. And yes- food gets stuck up in there. My mom had a "key" that she would have to turn twice a day to expand it even further. It hurt like hell!! Then I wore braces. Got those off. Never wore my retainer and now I need braces again. For real. Trey told me to piss off.

Fun times, Soladay Family!! Good luck, my dear.

As a former Orthodontic assistant, and patient, I highly recommend a lot of gum and tylenol! lol

And maybe a waterpik for the food that gets trapped under the expander.

Awwwe Alice is feeling nostalgic. Braces. Man. My sister had them, the poor thing. My teeth were straight, didn't need them, (of course the ortho said I did, but I decided he could suck it...at age 12), but I've noticed them shift in the last year or two. CRAP.
Dee's right, smile is everything, they'll thank you later. Until then, live vicariously through baby Hud! Or wait, just have another one. Yeah? Yeah!

I agree that it can be a bit expensive to have dental braces installed. But it’s better that your kids get braces while they’re young, because it will be easier to correct their teeth then. And I believe the cost will definitely be worth it when you see the huge difference in the process. All the best!
